IPTV stands for internet protocol television. Instead of reaching your TV through an aerial or a satellite dish, the picture arrives over your home broadband, the same way a video call or an on-demand app does.
How IPTV works
A provider collects channels and programmes, converts them into internet streams and sends them to your device when you ask for them. Your device runs an app that shows a channel list, a programme guide and a player. When you change channel, your app asks for a different stream.
Three things matter for the result you get:
- Your broadband. The stream needs a steady connection, not just a fast headline speed. Our speed calculator gives a planning figure for your household.
- Your device. Fire TV, Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac and many Smart TVs can run IPTV apps. See supported devices.
- Your provider. The quality of the service, the support and, importantly, the licensing sit with the provider.
IPTV, streaming apps and Freeview: what is different?
Freeview comes through an aerial and is free to receive. Streaming apps such as catch-up players and subscription services are IPTV in the technical sense, but you use one brand's app for one brand's content. An IPTV subscription from a provider normally brings many channels together in a single app.
The technology is ordinary and legal. What decides whether a particular service is acceptable is whether its provider has the right to supply the channels. We cover that in is IPTV legal in the UK?.
What you need to get started
- A broadband connection. Wired is steadier than Wi-Fi for a main TV.
- A compatible device and a player app. Our installation guide covers each device step by step.
- A subscription from a provider you have checked. Read how to choose a provider first.
Is IPTV right for you?
IPTV suits people who want a lot of choice in one place, who are comfortable installing an app and who have decent broadband. If you only watch a handful of free channels, an aerial may be all you need.
